Clay County FairResidents and visitors to Okoboji have the opportunity to enjoy the Clay County Fair each year. Located in Spencer, just 18 miles from Okoboji, it?s a quick drive to the fair.Since 1918, Iowa residents have been attending the Clay County Fair. The locals call it ?The World?s Greatest County Fair.? Held every mid-September over eight days, the fair offers something for everyone. Over 300,000 people visit the fair each year, making it one of the largest county fairs in the country and the largest in the Midwest. Each year the fair grows larger. All of the elements of a county fair are here ? cooking contests, livestock judging, art exhibits, agriculture exhibits and judging, a lively carnival on the fairway with over 80 rides and attractions, concerts, live entertainment, kid?s events, classic car shows, 4-H exhibits, and a whole lot more. A county fair could not be complete without the Grandstand and the Clay County Fair has its share of destruction derby?s, tractor pulls and rodeos. After the last festivity of the evening there are always fireworks, too. The concerts at the Clay County Fair are always first rate. They bring in excellent local performers along with popular national acts. In the past few years of the fair recent acts have included American Idol winners Carrie Underwood and Clay Aiken, country performers such as LeAnn Rimes, Vince Gill, Kenny Rogers and Martina McBride. They have also brought in classic rock acts such as Foreigner, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Styx. |
