This county, located in the northwest part of the state, is full of historic sites and cultural events. The county seat of Spencer is home to many parks, museums, two theatres, an art gallery, a hospital, and two 18-hole golf courses. Clay County was organized in 1858 and named for Lieutenant Colonel Henry Clay Jr., who was killed in action during the Mexican-American War and who was also the son of famous American statesman Henry Clay. The current site of Spencer, which had no settlers within a 10 mile radius, was originally selected by county officials as the county seat but the citizens of the county selected the more populated Peterson. In 1871 the seat was moved to Spencer which is more centrally located.

The county encompasses an area of 572.5 square miles, 3.6 of which is water area. The county population showed steady growth from 1915 to a peak of 19,576 in 1980, and showed a gradual decline after this, down to 16,977 in 2003. There are 7,828 houses in the county with an average household size of 2.35. The median household income in 2000 was $35,799 with a per capita income of $19,451. Also in 2000, the median house value was $74,400. The median age in the county was 39 with an even representation among the age groups, except 18-24 year olds who make up only 8% of the population. The male and female spilt is also fairly close with 93.30 males per 100 females. The fair market rent in 2006 for a one-bedroom apartment in Clay County was $377 a month and for a three-bedroom the rent was $605.

Clay County is a great location for vacationing with its many festivals and wealth of historic sites, including museums, the Clay County Courthouse (restored 1901), several vintage school houses, and the Kirschner Park House and Museum (which was the first frame dwelling in Clay County.)
