Dickinson County IA Real EstateDickinson County, located in the northwest portion of the state (bordering Minnesota to the north), is the smallest county in Iowa in total land area. The total land area is 381.1 square miles, with an additional 22.6 square miles of water. The many lakes in the region offer many hunting, fishing and water sports options. Thirty-eight of the county?s original forty settlers were murdered by renegade Sioux Indians in the winter of 1856. After the ?Spirit Lake Massacre? more settlers moved to the area, eventually leading to the organization of Dickinson County in 1857. The county was named for Daniel S. Dickinson, a lawyer and politician from New York. The current courthouse was actually the third building on that spot. The original courthouse was built in 1860 but later burned in 1872. A second courthouse was rebuilt using bricks that could be salvaged from the original structure. This building was condemned in 1880 and the construction of a new courthouse began in 1890. That building has seen three additions since its completion. The population of Dickinson County in 2005 was 16,687, representing a growth of 11.9% since 1990. The 2000 census showed 7,103 households in the county. The county showed a median household income of $41,537, and a per capita income of $34,213. The mean age in the county is 43.3 years of age, with an even split among the age groups, except the 18-24 year old group which represented only 6.6% of the total population. The median house value in 2000 was $96,800. The fair market value rent for a one bedroom apartment in 2006 was $398, with a three bedroom going for $630. The rural setting with many lakes and recreational opportunities make this a family friendly location. The increase in per capita income of 18.6% from 1997 to 2003, which is 1% above the national average per capita, also makes it a promising area for relocation. The county seat at Spirit Lake offers many amenities and Okoboji offers a great vacation spot with plenty of water for your recreation needs. So, whether you are looking for a relaxing family vacation destination or some room for the family to grow Dickinson County should be on the list.
