East Lake Okoboji Real EstateEast Lake Okoboji is the eastern end of Lake Okoboji, one of a chain of five connecting lakes that are part of the Iowa Great Lakes. When the glaciers receded from Iowa, they left behind one of the most beautiful natural playgrounds in the country. The Iowa Great Lakes are a series of five lakes that were scooped from the land by glaciers. The pristine blue water lakes and beautiful wooded shorelines have made the area surrounding the lakes a vacation haven for outdoors lovers for well over 100 years.Okoboji ? pronounced Ohkoboozhi ? is an Indian word that means ?Reeds and Rushes?, but it barely begins to describe the stunning beauty of the area. East Lake Okoboji is the longest natural lake in Iowa at 16 miles long, and often appears more like a river than a lake. In 1998, East Lake Okoboji was chosen as the site of the newest Iowa State Park. Opened in 2002, Elinor Bedell State Park, is one of the few undeveloped areas on the shoreline, offering the unspoiled beauty of the Iowa Great Lakes region at its best. The 16 mile shoreline of East Lake Okoboji forms the eastern boundary of the city of Okoboji. The 1835 acre lake meets West Lake Okoboji at the Highway 71 aqueduct, and its watershed is nearly 19 square miles of wetlands and playground for the most dedicated outdoorsmen and family fun. East Lake has an average depth of only ten feet and a maximum depth of 21 feet. As one of the more shallow of the Iowa Lakes, it?s an ideal spot for swimming, boating, sailing and fishing. Okoboji, the city surrounded by the five lakes, has been a popular vacation destination in Iowa for over a century. The area offers a wide array of activities to keep everyone in the family entertained, no matter what their interests, no matter what the season. The fishing is excellent, and a range of campgrounds and hotels offer lodgings and accommodations that run the gamut from under-the-stars camping to luxury cabins and resorts. While in Okoboji, vacationers can enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, para-sailing, ice fishing, camping, hiking and more. Elinor Bedell State Park includes a series of interconnected hiking trails that highlight the natural beauty of the area, and the city offers theater and arts, fine and casual dining and great shopping opportunities for travelers. The area?s most famous amusement park is located at the southern end of East Lake. Arnold?s Park offers 17 exciting rides, a miniature golf course and live concerts and events year round. The Park has its own private beach for sunning, swimming and other water sports, and cruises on the lake on the Queen II Excursion Boat. From May to September, enjoy extreme water sports including water ski, jet ski, tubes, wave runners, parasailing and wakeboards. For the more sedate, there?s kayak rentals and pontoon boats. Off water fun includes biking and hiking, as well as shopping in one of the area?s fine antique and craft shops. The Antique Mall, Central Emporium and Antiques, Etc are must-stops for any antique enthusiast, with each of them offering a wide collection of dealers all operating under one roof, and for those who want to sport the latest in wear from the world?s most famous fictitious university, The Three Sons specializes in gifts and wear bearing the imprint of the University of Okoboji. |
