Lake Minnewashta Real Estate

Once known as Middle Gar Lake, Lake Minnewashta is the ?bridge? between Upper Gar Lake and Lower Gar Lake in the Iowa Great Lakes region. It lies at the lower end of a chain of interconnected lakes that form the bulk of the Iowa Great Lakes. The other lakes in the chain include Lower and Upper Gar Lakes, East Lake Okoboji, West Lake Okoboji and Big Spirit Lake. The chain of lakes contains both the longest (East Lake Okoboji) and the deepest (West Lake Okoboji) of the Iowa natural lakes system. Minnewashta connects to Upper Gar Lake at the Sawmill Bridge and to Lower Gar at the Trails Bridge. Its name means ?nice? in Dakotah.

Lake Minnewashta covers 126 acres of water surface and has a shoreline of 2.3. miles. At its deepest, the lake is 16.5 feet deep, though it has an average depth of 10 feet. Its watershed area is 295 acres, much of it developed land, though there are national and regional wildlife preserves in the Minnewashta area.

Minnewashta is part of one of the oldest and most popular vacation areas in Iowa. Pristine and unspoiled, the lake areas offer fishing, boating and swimming venues for entertainment and activities. Minnewashta in particular is one of the best fishing spots for bluegill, bullheads and smallmouth bass in the state. While shore access for fishing is limited, there are a number of boat docks and access ramps, both on Lake Minnewashta itself and from further up the chain of lakes. In fact, one can ride on the water from the Iowa border all the way to the end of Lower Gar, below Minnewashta.

Besides fishing, visitors and residents alike can enjoy many other activities on Lake Minnewashta. The natural depth of the lake means that there are few restrictions on boat speed, so water skiing and wakeboarding are both popular activities. The lake has a number of sandy beaches for swimming and sunning, and area campsites offer lodging for those that enjoy the outdoors. The camping accommodations range from barebones lots to full hookups for RVs, affording a range of options for any family of campers.

A network of hiking trails that start at the top of the Great Lakes continues through the shores of Lake Minnewashta. The Spine Trail, an all season paved hiking trail, makes hiking easy, but for more challenge, there are a number of unpaved side trails that allow you to explore the National Wildlife Management area. The wildlife management area also has marked cross country trails for winter skiing. The wide, flat plains around the lake offer excellent venues for winter activities including ice fishing and snowmobiling.

If your tastes run to a bit more luxury than what?s afforded by most campgrounds, you?ll also find a wide variety of other types of lodging around Lake Minnewashta, including hotels, resorts, spas and bed and breakfasts. If you?re planning to settle permanently ? and many summer tourists do eventually choose to make their homes here ? you?ll find real estate that ranges from reasonable to extravagant, condo to full-sized beach houses with shore frontage. There?s a little something for everyone in Lake Minnewashta, and a lot of the best things in life for everyone.
