Population and Demographics
As of January, 2006, the population of Okoboji was 986, distributed over 500 households. The median age of residents is 46 years, but there is a substantial population of families with children under the age of 18.

Economy
Okoboji is solidly middle class, with the mean household income falling at $46,683. Approximately 53% of the households reported income under $50,000, with another 31% reporting incomes between $50,000 and $100,000. Unemployment is well below the national average, and expected to remain that way.

Much of the area?s economy is based on tourism, which is a year round business in and around the Great Lakes area. Despite the high tourist attraction, Okoboji remains a quiet, residential town with a nearly non-existent crime rate and a high neighborliness quotient.

Okoboji Attractions
Like most of Dickinson County, Okoboji?s most well-known attraction is the great outdoors. East and West Okoboji Lake offer excellent fishing, swimming and boating opportunities. The Dickinson County Spine Trail provides 16 miles of hard surface hiking trails throughout the region, with smaller trails offering more challenging hikes for more experienced hikers. National and regional wildlife management areas offer both hunting and wildlife preservation activities in a wide variety of terrains from oak forests to meadows.

Okoboji and its surroundings also offer many manmade attractions for residents and visitors. There are delightful shops and restaurants located along Highway 71, as well as summer theater (by the students at nearby Stephens College, one of the most highly regarded undergraduate theater programs in the nation), amusement parks and six golf courses within a four mile radius.
