Upper Gar Lake Real EstateWith a mean depth of 3.5 feet, and a surface area of just 37 acres, Upper Gar Lake is the smallest of the chain of Iowa Great Lakes. Its depth and size impose a 5 mph speed limit for boats on the lake, making it unsuited for many of the recreational activities enjoyed on the larger lakes. Those same reasons, however, make Upper Gar an ideal lake for fishing and swimming.Upper Gar Lake is located between East Lake Okoboji and Lake Minnewashta, once known as Middle Gar Lake. The Gar Lakes were named for the schools of gar, a popular sports fish, which used them as a spawning outlet. The fishing is still stellar on Upper Gar Lake, with many sporting fish found in the shallow waters. In addition to the water activities, though, Upper Gar offers some of the best hiking and biking trails in the area. The eastern shore of Upper Gar Lake is nearly all part of the Upper Gar Wildlife Management Area, offering trails through the watershed with the opportunity to explore the native wildlife on guided and unguided tours. Along those unspoiled trails, you?ll find Upper Gar Lake also offers access to entertainment venues throughout the Okoboji area. These entertainments include the summer theater playhouses and winter snowmobile trails. Horseshoe Bend, located just a few miles south of Milford, offers the use of three season shelters houses, and mowed trails with wildlife blinds that allow easy viewing of wild birds and pheasants and other wildlife in the habitat area. In the winter, there?s over 1100 miles of interconnected snowmobile trails with available equipment rentals for tubing and riding. The Upper Gar Lake area also offers easy access to the Dickinson County Recreational Trails, branching off the Spine Trail that connects the four Great Lakes communities. The biking and hiking trails offer varying degrees of challenging workouts for outdoors enthusiasts. Golfing is yet another popular outdoor activity in the Great Lakes region of Iowa. With seven golf clubs within an easy drive, there?s plenty of opportunity to perfect a golf swing or enjoy an easy nine on the green when you?re staying or living on Upper Gar Lake. The Upper Gar area also is one of the lesser developed areas, and real estate prices in Upper Gar are slightly lower than in the pricier Iowa Great Lakes regions.
