Okoboji Winter Festival | Okoboji Winter GamesThe cold and snow of winter may keep some people behind closed doors, but it certainly doesn?t keep the residents of Okoboji holed away. In the winter Okoboji is as vital as it is in the warm months. The biggest testament to this is the yearly winter festival known as the Annual University of Okoboji Winter Games. If you are unfamiliar with the University of Okoboji, don?t be surprised. It?s a fictitious school, but the residents of Okoboji use this fictitious school as the sponsor of many fun events throughout the year, the biggest being the Winter Games. Held over a weekend each January, the Winter Games include broomball (a game much like ice hockey without ice skates), miniature golf on ice, softball, snowmobile races, flag football, freeze your fanny bike rides, snow shoe hikes, ice bowling, arm wrestling, polar beat swims and many other fun, wild and wacky events. The local high schools also get involved and schedule varsity basketball games against each other. Athletics aren?t the only events held during this weekend. A big chili cook-off is always held on Friday night to help kick off the weekend followed by concerts held throughout the area. On Saturday night there is the annual ?burning of the greens? where residents donate their Christmas trees for the festivities. Following the ?burning of the greens? there is a spectacular fireworks display for everyone?s enjoyment. |
